The Irish Hills Towers
The Michigan Observation Company (MOC) was organized in 1924
for the purpose of creating an attractive destination to draw
visitors to the Irish Hills. The MOC opened the first observation
tower on Bundy Hill on the Chicago Turnpike, west of Somerset
Center, over the Labor Day weekend in 1924 and the Original
Irish Hills Tower the weekend of October 4-5, 1924. The Reverend
Frederick Hewitt of the Walker Tavern gave a speech on the
beauty of the Irish Hills. A band was engaged to entertain
visitors on both days and admission was five cents. By November
1924, both towers were opened and operating doing “a
‘land office’ business” according to the
Manchester Enterprise.
Each tower had an interior stairway and windows along the
ascent provided opportunities for viewing. The top offered
a panorama of the surrounding countryside and lakes: Iron,
Sand, Wamplers, Evans and Vineyard.
